even in a real fight people don't try to gouge out eyes or break limbs because you can go to jail so yes karate is effective

and btw
kyokushin is best for self defense. in the ring it is used just like that. kykushin's goal is to knock the opponent down and keep him away.
muay thai is a knockout martial art, it concentrates on seizing your oppurtunity and ko your opponent when he does a mistake
